You finally have your degree, but so do thousands of other fresh graduates entering the Sri Lankan job market this year. How do you convince an employer to hire you?
Many university graduates write purely academic CVs detailing every module they took. Employers in the corporate sector don't care about your course modules; they care about what practical skills you derived from them and whether you are ready for a real-world office environment.
What is a Graduate CV?
A fresh graduate CV is a targeted resume that bridges the gap between your academic achievements and corporate requirements. It brings your internships, final year projects, and academic leadership to the forefront.
Why It Matters
Graduate roles and management trainee programs are highly competitive. A well-optimized ATS-friendly graduate CV gets you past the automated filters and proves you have the practical hard skills (like data analysis, programming, or accounting standards) the job requires.
Step 1: The 'Education First' Approach
As a fresh graduate, your degree is your strongest selling point. Place Education near the top. Include your university, degree title, class/GPA (if it's a 2nd upper or 1st class), and graduation year.
Step 2: Spotlight Your Final Year Project or Thesis
Treat your major university project like a job. Dedicate a section to it. Explain the problem you solved, the tools/software you used, and the final outcome of the research.
Step 3: Detail Your Internship Experience
If you did a 6-month undergraduate internship, this should be detailed extensively under 'Work Experience'. Focus on what you delivered, not just what you observed.
Step 4: Include University Societies & Leadership
Being a board member of the Rotaract club, Leo club, or Student Union in Sri Lankan universities carries heavy weight. It proves teamwork, networking, and leadership.
Step 5: List Hard Technical Skills
Create a dedicated 'Technical Skills' section. List software, programming languages, accounting tools, or laboratory techniques you mastered during your degree.

Common Mistakes
- Listing every single university module you studied.
- Making the CV beautifully designed but completely unreadable by ATS software.
- Hiding your internship at the bottom of the page.
- Forgetting to mention specific hard skills.
Final Checklist
- Is my degree and GPA clearly visible at the top?
- Did I elaborate on my internship using bullet points?
- Is my final year project highlighted?
- Are club memberships and leadership roles included?
- Does the CV pass standard ATS formatting rules?
