Accountant CV writing

An Accountant CV is screened on three things before anything else: your qualification, your systems, and the size of what you were responsible for.

4.9(107)Direct with Chanuka

Quick answer

An Accountant CV must show three things in the first five lines: your qualification status, the accounting systems you use, and the scope you were responsible for, such as turnover, entities and team size. Recruiters filter on those before reading anything else. After that, the bullets should prove ownership of the close and improvements to how the numbers are produced.

Overview

Accountant spans bookkeeping through to financial control, and the market treats those as different professions. The qualification and the reporting scope tell a recruiter which one you are, and a CV that leaves either vague gets filtered out early.

What employers screen for

What a Accountant CV has to prove.

  • Qualification and status: ACCA, CIMA, CA, CPA, part-qualified or qualified by experience
  • Accounting systems in current use, named specifically
  • Scope: turnover managed, entities handled, team size
  • Month-end and year-end ownership rather than assistance
  • Statutory reporting standard: IFRS, local GAAP, or both
  • Audit, tax and compliance exposure relevant to the target market

Positioning

How to position the CV.

The qualification and the reporting scope belong in the first five lines. After that, the CV should show ownership: closing the month rather than helping close it, and what you improved about how the numbers get produced.

Skills worth naming

  • Financial reporting under IFRS or local GAAP
  • Month-end and year-end close
  • Reconciliations and controls
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Accounts payable and receivable
  • Tax compliance
  • ERP and accounting systems such as SAP, Oracle, Xero or QuickBooks
  • Advanced Excel modelling

Keywords an ATS looks for

Use these where they are true. Keywords carry weight when the experience behind them is visible, and none at all when they are stacked in a list.

  • accountant
  • financial reporting
  • month-end close
  • reconciliations
  • IFRS
  • ACCA
  • budgeting
  • accounts payable

Achievement examples

What a strong bullet looks like.

These are written in the shape a Accountant bullet should take: the situation, the decision, and what moved. Use them as a pattern, never as text to copy.

  1. 01

Reduced the month-end close from 12 working days to 6 by rebuilding the reconciliation process and automating three recurring journals.

  2. 02

Managed the full reporting cycle for three entities with combined turnover of $18M, including statutory accounts and the annual audit.

  3. 03

Identified and recovered $96k in duplicate supplier payments over an 18-month period, and closed the control gap that allowed them.

  4. 04

Led the migration from QuickBooks to SAP for a 40-person business, completing the cutover with no reporting gap and training the finance team of five.

Accountant Positioning

Need your Accountant CV rewritten for international roles?

Chanuka personally structures your stack, achievements, and leadership metrics to pass enterprise ATS filters and impress hiring managers.

Seniority

What changes as you move up.

Assistant Accountant

Transactional accuracy and support to the close. Part-qualification is usually the signal.

Accountant

Ownership of the close for an entity or area, with statutory exposure.

Senior Accountant

Multiple entities, audit lead, and improvement of the process itself.

Financial Controller

Team leadership, controls environment, and the numbers the board acts on.

Mistakes

What costs Accountant candidates interviews.

  • Leaving qualification status unclear, which stalls the application immediately
  • No turnover, entity count or team size, so the scope cannot be judged
  • Listing duties that are assumed in the role rather than achievements
  • Not naming the reporting standard when applying to another market
  • Generic Excel claims in a profession where modelling depth is the differentiator

FAQ

Accountant CV questions

How should I show part-qualified ACCA or CIMA status on my CV?

State exactly how many exams or levels you have passed and when you expect to finish, for example "ACCA: 9 of 13 exams passed, finals expected June 2027". "ACCA student" alone is too vague to screen. Put it in the header line or profile, because recruiters often filter on qualification stage before they read any experience.

Should an accountant CV mention IFRS or local GAAP?

Yes, always name the standard you reported under, and name both if you have used both. An overseas employer uses it to judge how much of your experience transfers. If you prepared accounts under local standards but are applying to an IFRS market, mention any IFRS conversion, consolidation or training work, because that is the bridge they are looking for.

What Excel skills should an accountant put on a CV?

Name the specific skills, not "advanced Excel". Lookups, pivot tables, Power Query, three-statement or cash flow models, and macros tell a reader what you can actually build. Better still, attach one to an outcome, such as a reconciliation template that took a day out of the close. Every accountant claims Excel; only the specific claims are believed.

Can I get my accountant CV and LinkedIn profile done together?

Yes. Booking CV writing and LinkedIn optimisation together saves 20%, and adding a cover letter as well saves 30% across all three. Chanuka writes each one personally from the same brief, so your qualification, systems and scope read consistently everywhere, which matters when a recruiter checks your LinkedIn straight after reading your CV.
